Helping Houston

I'm sure you've all watched some sort of coverage of the horrible events that are unfolding in Houston and the surrounding areas of Texas right now. Hurricane Harvey ravaged the Texas coast and has drowned the Houston areas.

I know that these images may look frightening- and they are- but, as a resident just a little to the East in Louisiana, I know that the worst is yet to come for these strong residents. As the floodwaters recede, many will go back to demolished homes and will have to rebuild their lives. What can you do to help?

There are tons of ways that you can help these victims both right now and once they face the task of rebuilding their lives. You can check your local church parishes or humanitarian outlets to see if there is any program you can donate goods or your physical time to.

If you are living in the area and somehow were not as affected as those in the city, please consider donating to food banks, blood banks, and animal shelters.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner began an online opportunity to donate to those in need. You can visit the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund to learn more.

If you are not in the area, you can always donate time, goods, and money to organizations like The Red Cross and AmeriCares. If you're interested in donating blood but do not live in the area, AABB is a good outlet. According to AABB, they are in most need of the O positive blood type.

Keep those affected by Harvey in your thoughts, but do not let these people and their needs be forgotten once new coverage has stopped.
